about

This is the song that made this whole album happen. I found myself up in Rhode Island in Nov of 2013 under tragic circumstances and some old friends offered to help give my girlfriend and I with a place to stay in my old home of Newport. Since we were in Newport, I decided to give me old friend, Steve Rizzo a call. We went out to dinner and caught up on the past 10-20 years. He offered for me to come by the studio and record a song for free. I gladly accepted and we decided to track "The Devil's Heart"

Returning to that studio was a real timewarp and all of the magic was still there. I had come a long way since my first recordings there literally 20 years ago. We tracked a live guitar and vocal and then added a tremolo guitar and an old parade drum. That was it.

The song turned out perfect for what I was going for and sparked the inspiration to do an entire album there in a very stripped down approach that was all about the songs.

The Devil's Heart became the model for the whole album and how we were going to approach it.

lyrics

The Devil’s Heart

Think there’s something wrong with me
Let another good girl down
I didn’t know what to do
So, I told her the truth

Sorry babe, I gave my heart to the devil
It’s the only thing he would take
To let me spare my soul

I think it’s something kind of safe
A loner in this star walk town
Where love only exists in a song
It hurts then it’s gone
See I’ve spent my whole life
Just tryin to get it right
Now I’m closer than I ever could be
So, get out of my way now
Oh, you’ve got to lay down
Later, I’ll give you all the lovin’ you need

Sorry babe, I gave my heart to the devil
It’s the only thing he would take
I had to save my soul

I went to the crossroads such a long time ago
Searching for the key to the dream
They gave me the good stuff
But, you know it’s never enough
Got to find your own way back to love

Sorry babe, I gave my heart to the devil
Sorry babe, I gave my heart to the…
Sorry babe, I gave my heart to the devil
gave my heart to the devil
gave my heart to the devil
