about

I originally recorded this song with Paper Sun and it appeared on the GOOD THINGS album from back in 2004. I always felt like this song deserved a more stripped down version to really capture what it was about.

As with almost every song on the album, we started with a live performance of the acoustic guitar and vocal and then we added electric guitar and lap steel. I literally taught myself lap steel in order to record this one.

For the solo, I was so bored with everything I was coming up with naturally that I asked Steve, "what would Jimmy Page do?" He said that Jimmy would tune his guitar all fucked up and teach himself how to play in the new tuning. It worked because of the different voicings that you couldn't get with regular tunings and forced me to make different choices than usual.

lyrics

Valentine

I bought you flowers for Valentine’s Day
One dozen roses came just a little too late…it was the month of May
Don’t you know that I picked those pedals all day
Just trying to figure out if you were feeling the same
CHORUS
‘Said, ”please don’t think that I’m just wasting your time
Won’t you let me down easy if I can’t change your mind
You’ll feel just what you’re missing when we’re kissing goodbye
Swallow your pride,
Baby be mine”

My best intention just ain’t good enough
I've gotta wonder why I haven’t given up on love
And why you don’t realize every time that I looks in your eyes
I send this message with love

CHORUS
‘Said, “please don’t think that I’m just wasting your time
Won’t you let me down easy if I can’t change your mind
You’ll feel just what your missing when we’re kissing goodbye
Swallow your pride,
Baby be mine”

‘Said, “please don’t think that I’m just wasting your time
Won’t you let me down easy if I can’t change your mind
You’ll feel just what your missing when we’re kissing goodbye
Swallow your pride,
Baby be mine”
Swallow your pride,
Baby be mine”
Swallow your pride,
Baby be mine”
